The football Bruins will open the season tonight at Fremont. Just a stones throw away from Michigan, the game is set for a 7:30pm start. The Bruins head into the game having lost their 11 games, but new head coach Randy Sehy hopes to change things in a hurry. The Bruins last on in the regular season finale in ’14 with a 17-14 overtime win over Elwood.
Coach Sehy joins the program four years after leading Marion to a 24-28 record over five seasons. That followed a very successful 3-year stint at Madison-Grant where he lead the Argylls to a 21-13 record and a sectional title in ’06. Jim Hummer enters his third season at Fremont where he is 2-18. He is 84-129 overall after two winning stints at Eastside (18-11) and Greencastle (14-6) before spending eight seasons at DeKalb (27-47) prior to taking over at Fremont.
The road team has won both contests between the two schools. The Bruins defeated the Eagles 19-0 in ’14 before being shutout 20-0 by the Eagles in ’15. The Eagles went on to defeat Prairie Heights 36-0 in week 8 as they finished 2-8. With the exception of the game against each other and the Eagles shutout of Prairie Heights, both teams gave up over 33 points in each of their remaining games in ’15 so both teams hope to improve on their
defensive fortunes in ’16.
Both programs have fell on hard times in recent years and low numbers has hurt both schools. As a result, the JV game scheduled at Bruin Field on Saturday has already been cancelled. MaxPreps ranks the Eagles 296th in the state entering tonight’s game. The Bruins are ranked 330th.
The Eagles last winning season was an 8-4 season under Dan Callahan in 2001.The last
winning season for the Bruins was in ’08 as they finished 6-5 under Eric Davis. Needless
to say that both teams will be looking forward to tonight’s opener.
Their is excitement in the air as several students are heading up on a fan bus to watch the game tonight. Good luck to Coach Sehy and the Bruins!
