The varsity boys basketball team dropped to 0-7 after falling to Muncie Burris last night in Ball Gym 57-46. The Bruins got off to a 7-5 lead initially, but turnovers led to a 6 point deficit after one quarter. A second stretch of turnovers led to a larger deficit at the half of which the Bruins could not recover despite outscoring the Owls 18-8 in the fourth quarter.
Ethan Huffman led in scoring with 12 points. Tyler Cagle and Andrew Beckley scored 10 points apiece. Brandon Stroble and Mark White each scored 5. Cagle also added 5 rebounds.
The JV boys got out to a first quarter lead 16-13 and didn’t look back. The Bruins outscored the owls 23-10 in the second quarter to lead 39-23 at halftime. Coach Grant Newlin was happy with his team’s performance, “A lot of guys were able to get some quality minutes tonight. All 13 players saw the floor and Brayden Overmyer was able to knock in his first basket of the year. It was a great team win. I thought the team did a really nice job on defense by pressuring the ball and anticipating passes, without getting into foul trouble. Fouls have been a downfall for several bruins the last couple of games, so I before the game I really emphasized the importance of playing solid defense without fouling and the players responded well”, stated Coach Newlin.
Brandon Stroble scored 17 points, all coming in the first half, and Caleb Mealy also added 17 in the win.
The Bruins look to win their third straight on Friday at Elwood. The JV game tips off at 6pm in the auxiliary gym. Please note that his is a boys/girls double header. The varsity girls will be playing at 6pm in Elwood’s main gym.
