Multiple Teams · Bruins Fall to Southern Wells

The varsity boys basketball team fell to Southern Wells 85-43 at Southern Wells last night. The Bruins fell behind early and could never recover. They are now 1-19 on the season.

The Bruins had a  balanced scoring attack led by Tyler Cagle who scored 11 points and added 6 rebounds. Mark White and Andrew Beckley scored 10 and 8 points respectively. Dalton Willmann added 7 rebounds and 5 points. Kerigan Reynard chipped in 6 rebounds and 4 points. Nate Brown scored 4 rebounds and 2 points. Caleb Messersmith pulled down 3 rebounds and added a point and Austin Elkins added a block and a basket for 2 points.

Coach Scott Clamme shared, “We got off to a slow start. We lost vision of their shooters a few times in the first quarter and their players did a good job of knocking down the open shots.” Coach Clamme continued, “Often we will have 3 or 4 guys in the right spot and executing correctly, but one or two guys being in the wrong spot will allow a basket. We always emphasize that it takes all 5 of our guys to defend all 5 of their guys, but tonight we just didn’t do a good job in that area.”

The JV Bruins got behind early in the first by giving up too many offensive rebounds and second-chance points. Coach Grant Newlin explained, “In the second quarter, we were more aggressive on the offensive end and hit three 3-pointers however Southern Wells continued to hurt us on the glass.”

The Raiders had a 10+ rebound advantage at the half and Coach Newlin stressed to his team  that they all had to block out better. Newlin was much happier with the second half. He stated, “Although the Raiders started to hit some shots in the second half, I was pleased with how the guys responded and they were really focused on blocking out their guy and not allowing them to get second-chance opportunities on any missed shots.

Jaden Reum led the Bruins, now 5-15, with 8 points.

The Bruins host Wabash tonight for Senior Night. Seniors in basketball, wrestling, swimming, cheer and band will be recognized immediately after the JV game. The JV game tips off at 6pm.
