In the first of a series of interviews with fall head coaches, football coach Randy Sehy shares a few thoughts on summer preparations and goals for the ’17 season.
What are you hoping to accomplish with your summer workouts?
We work three mornings a week to improve our strength and conditioning. Team nights and 11-on-11 scrimmages have been great for introducing our offense and defense as well as giving the returners an early tune-up. As coaches, we want to see who the dedicated players are and who has the desire to improve our program.
How has attendance been so far?
Our attendance this summer has been a little disappointing. We average about 25 guys in the weight room in the mornings and about the same for team night workouts. The bulk of those players have been juniors, sophomores and freshmen, which bodes well for the future. These young guys have really stepped up and many of them have earned the right to compete for a starting job on the varsity team.
What are your thoughts after the first few workouts?
As a team, we are way ahead of where we were at this time last year. We need to shore things up on the defensive side of the ball and continue to improve offensively. Still, the coaches and players are excited about the potential for success this coming season.
Can you share about expectations and goals for this year?
We haven’t talked about wins and losses much this summer, but we have talked about improving defensively and offensively. Defensively, we cannot continue to give up 40 points per game. We need to bring that down into the 20’s. Offensively, we have talked about increasing our offensive production another TD or more.
Anything you wish to add?
The Bruins will be improved this year and should be exciting to watch. We are very excited for the start of another season.
