Good time to be a Bruin as the varsity boy’s basketball team scrapped their way to a 54-52 win over Daleville on Tuesday to pick up their twelfth win of the season. In doing so, the Bruins assured themselves of their first winning season since the ’01-02 season. It was the first ever meeting between the two schools and the fans left having watched a very exciting finish.
The game was pretty even through the first half. The Bruins came out in the 3rd quarter and started to stretch their lead and extended it to 15 points on two separate possessions. Despite having the 15 point lead, the Broncos started to make their way back into the game. Late in the fourth, the Broncos tied the game and later had a chance to win it. But they was unable to convert and the Bruins hit their free-throws when they mattered most. JD Hoover’s two free throws after a rebound of a Bronco miss gave the Bruins a 4 point lead to assure the win. Daleville put in a lay up as the buzzer sounded to end the game down two.
JD Hoover finished with 26 points, 13 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 blocks to lead the Bruins. Mark White followed with 13 points, 11 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Brandon Stroble finished with 11 points. Tyler Cagle pulled down 8 rebounds and dished out 3 assists.
The Bruins will look to tie the 14 wins under Coach Bryan Rausch in ’01-02. That team finished the season 14-9.
The JV Bruins improved to 7-12 with an impressive 50-30 victory. The Bruins were led by Dalton Willmann with 15 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists in two quarters of play. Peyton Hurd followed with 11 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals. Steffen Hoover finished with 8 points, 9 rebounds, and 7 steals. Caleb Mealy was very disruptive on defense and ended with 10 deflections to go along with 4 steals.
The Bruins host Southern Wells on Friday night. The JV game tips off at 6:00pm. Senior Night recognition follows immediately after the JV game and prior to the varsity warm-up.
