Boys Junior Varsity Basketball, Boys Varsity Basketball · Stroble 3 Leads Bruins Past Raiders

Brandon Stroble’s electrifying 3 from the corner with 8 seconds left lead the Bruins past the Southern Wells Raiders in front of a nice sized crowd in Bruin Gym. The Raiders, winners of three of their past six games, lead most of the way after the Bruins grabbed an early 3-2 lead. The lead got as large as 10 early in the third. The Bruins would climb back in it with the help of Dalton Willmann who entered the game and gave the home team a spark. The Bruins rallied to take a one point lead late in the third, but the Raiders hit a buzzer beater to lead 44-43.

Mark White and JD Hoover hit buckets to give the Bruins a brief lead. Both teams would battle back and forth to a 51-51 tie with 3:32 to play. Trailing by four with 1:29 to play, JD Hoover free throws cut the lead to two. The Raiders went up three, but Tyler Cagle hit a bucket and was fouled. He missed the free throw, but the Bruins were within one with 54.6 to go.

Stroble hit a ridiculous (in a good way) driving, twisting shot to cut the lead to two. Mark White then stole a pass and found JD Hoover who was fouled. He hit the first of two to cut the lead to 1 with 30.7 to play. The Bruins had a chance to take the lead but Hoover lost control of the ball driving to the basket. Southern Wells raced to the far end and a Raider was fouled on a lay up that was missed. He missed the first, but hit the second giving the Raiders a 2-point lead with 15.8 to go and setting the stage for one heck of a finish.

After taking the in-bounds pass, Hoover raced across the time line with 11 seconds or so remaining in the game. He found Jake Ross on the left wing who immediately flipped it to Stroble in the left corner near the Bruin bench. Stroble launched his three (see ball on way below) and it fell through the net with 8 seconds to go. The crowd went nuts!

The Raiders raced to the other end and, after a quick pass to the top of the key, got off a pretty good look from 3-point range but the shot hit the front of the rim and bounced away as the horn sounded. With the win, the Bruins improved to 13-7 on the year.

The Bruins were led by Brandon Stroble with 23 points. For the seniors final game at home, JD Hoover finished with 20 points, 12 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals. Tyler Cagle finished with 6 points, 9 rebounds, and 2 assists. Ethan Huffman finished with 2 points and 2 assists. Jake Ross ended with 3 rebounds, a steal, and the assist to Stroble to win the game. It was the 23rd win in 41 tries in the series.

The JV Bruins won 50-44 in a game that was also tight much of the way. Dalton Willmann hit 6 free throws down the stretch to provide the margin of victory. He scored 27 to lead the Bruins. Nate Brown scored 7. Steffen Hoover added 6. They are now 8-12.

The Bruins head to Wabash tonight. The JV game tips off at 6:00pm.
