The Blackford Bruins picked up a win against Anderson Preparatory Academy on Friday night, 58-50, to improve to 14-8 on the year. The Bruins took a 31-25 lead into halftime, but APA scored 8 straight points to start the 3rd quarter to take the lead. The Bruins weathered the storm and ripped off 10 unanswered points to take a 41-33 heading to the fourth.
The Bruins would extend the lead to double digits and lead by 11 with 3:07 to go. APA would keep things interesting and managed to cut the lead to six with 10 seconds to go in the game. The Bruins would hit 13-18 from the line in the fourth quarter. JD Hoover hit two free throws to ice the game with nine seconds to go to provide the final margin, 58-50.
The Bruins were led by JD Hoover with 22 points, 12 rebounds, and 5 assists. Brandon Stroble followed with 14 points and 6 rebounds. Mark White finished with 11 points and 9 rebounds before going out with a rolled ankle just over halfway through the fourth quarter. Tyler Cagle added 6 points and 3 rebounds.
Hoover currently sits 8th on the single season scoring charts with 414 points. The injured Luke Brown is just ahead at 417. With 13 points on Tuesday, he could move to 5th on the list and pass former Bruins Gregg Jones, Orrin Bargerhuff, and Chris Stroble (the all-time career scoring leader at BHS), who is the uncle of Brandon Stroble. He also sits 6th in a season with 236 rebounds. He sits two behind Gregg Jones and 12 behind Don Yaden. Orrin Bargerhuff is the leader at 375.
The JV jumped out to a 16-2 lead early and never looked back in winning their finale, 56-27, over APA. Caleb Mealy unofficially scored 11. Dalton Willmann scored 10. Steffen Hoover added 7. They finished the season 9-13.
The Bruins open sectional play against Yorktown at 7:30pm on Tuesday at New Castle.
