If you have to have your season end with a loss, which all but one team in the state does, this was the way to do it. Madison-Grant edged the Lady Bruins 3-2 in an exciting sectional match at Marion High School. No. 1 singles Junior Tori Baker was able to defeat her opponent from M-G for the second time this season in a tension filled match by winning 2 tie-breakers by the closest of margins 7-5 and 7-5 for a straight sets win. She was able to come back from a 5-2 deficit in the first set to force a tie-breaker and was down 4-5 in the second set before rallying to win it. Tori will continue play in the IHSAA individual tournament next week.
Senior Audrey Foster was able to turn around an earlier season loss to her M-G opponent by winning in straight sets 6-4, 6-1. Coach Brian Smith stated afterwards, “It was a great way for Audrey to end her playing career at BHS.”
The 1 doubles team of fellow Sophomores Ashley Willman/Skylar Stephens played a very good match as they tried their best to come up with the 3rd point of the night, but came up short losing in two sets 6-2, 6-4. Cooach Smith shared on the duo, “(They) got a little discouraged after moving up to 1 doubles in the middle of the season, but have come a long way. They went from only winning one game earlier in the season against the M-G team to winning six games in their two sets tonight. Looking forward to watch them progress even further next year.”
Senior Brittaney Dillon ended her BHS career with a hard fought loss at 3 singles while the 2 doubles team of sophomores Kayleigh Clevenger/Jenna Keplinger also fought hard, but lost in the end.
Coach Smith concluded, “I told all the ladies they should be very proud of the way they played tonight. I’d like to thank everyone on the team, especially my 2 Seniors Audrey and Brittaney. They won’t be easy to replace next year. I would like to thank everyone who came out and watched us play this year. Also, thank you to all the parents and family members who gave support to their girls and provided food and water for our matches. Last but not least, a big thanks to my student managers Jerret Barker and Austin Collett. You both were a great help to me and the team.”
Best of luck to Tori Baker next week! Once the schedule is set, head over and root her on at Marion HS.
