Bruins News · Bruins Fall to #5 Northwestern, 90-79

The boys basketball team dug a deep hole early and, despite a great group effort, could not overcome being down 27-12 after one. The Tigers (17-1) got a big game from featured junior, Tayson Parker, who dropped in 15 of his 41 points in the first quarter. The Tigers seemingly couldn’t miss early leaving a good sized crowd of Bruin fans silent at the first break.

The Bruins would regroup and chip away for much of the remainder of the night. Luke Brown would not get his first points til early in the second quarter. He would score 10 in the second to help prevent the Tigers from getting too far away. Northwestern lead at the half 50-36.
The Bruins seemed to find their groove in the third and cut the lead to 65-56 with just under a minute to go in the third. Brown and Stroble continued to help shoot the Bruins back into the game, but they got more help then usual from their teammates offensively as Mark White, Caleb Mealy and Dalton Willmann all chipped in 8 points. Steffen Hoover, in limited minutes, added 4. The Bruins trailed 69-58 after 3. Brown had 23 at that point and was doing his best in the second half to try to stop the efforts of Parker who ended up with 41 points. Parker also scored the 1000th point of his career in his 41st career game. This tied the record set by Jalon Blackmon of Marion just a week or so ago. Parker was honored for that mark during a stoppage in play.

The fourth quarter was fast and furious as the Bruins made one last attempt to catch up. Luke Brown hit a big-time 3 to cut the lead to 69-63 with just under four minutes to play. The Bruins had one shot after a steal by White to cut the lead to four but his contested lay-up wouldn’t drop and the Bruins were forced to foul the remainder of the game. Brown tossed in 11 in the fourth to finish with 34 points. He added 9 assists. Brandon Stroble had a nice night with 17.

The Bruins hit 50% of their shots on the game but actually shot slightly better from behind the arc. The Tigers shot over 60% for the game and had several easy buckets behind Bruin defenders including two dunks by Parker early.

White and Mealy each grabbed 5 rebounds and recorded 3 assists. Brown added 4 rebounds.
