Bruins News · Lady Bruins Fall in Season Opener

The Blackford Lady Bruins started off the season falling to Southwood 52-40. A tough early shooting night for the Bruins, and vice versa for the Knights, put the Bruins  into a 17-2 deficit after the first quarter. The Knights would extend the lead to 22-2 early in the second before the Bruins came to life.

Stepping up the defensive intensity and finally getting a few shots to drop, the Bruins battled back to a 29-21 deficit at the half. The Bruins would cut the lead to five early in the third before running out of gas in their comeback. The Knights stretched their lead to 13 after three and went on to win it, 52-40.

Coach Mitch Waters said, “It was a difficult loss tonight, because we felt like we had a solid game plan and that we were ready to get off to a good start. However, it’s really hard to win games if you start out giving the other team a 15 point lead. We came out very flat on defense and lacked communication which allowed them to get 4 easy corner 3 point shots. Our girls also struggled to knock down open jumpers.  We were 3 of 29 from behind the 3-point line tonight. I would venture to say 26 or 27 of those were wide open looks. Everyone was a little nervous, but I never expected our team to miss that many open shots, because these girls have put in the work and had a great off-season.”
Waters added, “Helen Whitesell had a great game on the offensive end hitting our only 3’s of the night and finished with 13 points. Now we have to erase this game and come back on Friday ready for Daleville.

Helen Whitesell led the Lady Bruins (0-1) with a flurry of 13 points all in the first half. Jaycie Sones scored 7 points and added 5 rebounds. Olivia Waters scored 5 points and had several blocked shots. Grace Simmons scored 5 and recorded 5 rebounds. Reaghan Harding scored 4 points and added 7 rebounds. Olivia Leas had 9 rebounds.

The Lady Bruins JV team lost the opener 32-15. Down only by 5 at half, the Lady Bruins just couldn’t get the stops needed defensively to stay in it and couldn’t get shots to fall.

Kiley Eppard led the Bruins (0-1) with 5 points and 3 steals. Macy Cagle recorded 3 points, 3 rebounds and 5 steals. Bri Stroble hit a 3 and pulled down 3 rebounds. Cayley Hodges hustled her way to 2 points and grabbed 7 rebounds and Khaira Westerfield added 2 points.

Blackford travels to Daleville on Friday. The JV game tips off at 6pm.
