The Bruins hosted the Wabash Apaches on Saturday night and came away with an 83-65 win to improve to 17-4. It was also their 8th win in a row overall and 17th straight win at home. It was also the 525th win in program history.
Luke Brown and Landon Grimes hit 3s to give the Bruins the early 6-0 advantage, but the Apaches, who came in 4-14 overall, rallied to take n 18-17 lead late it the first. A Brown basket plus one put the Bruins up 20-18 at the break. The Bruins increased that lead to five early in the second, but the Apaches continued to fight and scrap, looking little like a 4-win team, to get within 34-32 late in the half. Grimes hit two and Dawson Hundley followed with a big 3 late to give the Bruins a cushion, up 39-32 at the half. Brown had 17 and Grimes added 12 at that point.
The Bruins started the second half where they left off with Brown hitting a basket and Cam Elam adding a 3 to put the Bruins up 44-32. The Apaches would cut the lead to eight, 44-36, but that would be the closest they would get the rest of the night. The Bruins would go on to lead 59-48 after three periods. The Bruins found the pace a bit more to their liking in the fourth, as they outscored the Apaches 24-17 to go on for the 18-point win.
Luke Brown led all scorers with 37 points. He hit 14 of 23 shots from the field and added 6 rebounds, 5 assists, a steal and a block. Landon Grimes finished with 17 points. He added 9 boards, 2 assists and 2 blocks. Cam Elam scored 13 points, on 6 of 8 shooting, and added 6 rebounds and 3 assists. Dawson Hundley scored 10. He added a rebound and 3 assists. Freshman Ethan Morris scored 4 points off the bench. Dane Baker scored 2 points and added 3 rebounds and an assist. Mickey Waters and Scott Winger didn’t score, but Waters added an assist and a block and Winger recorded 4 rebounds. The Bruins hit 53% of their shots on the night.
The Bruins get right back at it tomorrow night as they head to South Adams to play the Starfires (13-7). 500 tickets will be sold at the gate for that game. The gate opens at 5:15pm. The Bruins will then head to Ball State to play Burris (8-8) on Wednesday. The Bruins had 500 online tickets allotted to them of which 275 or so were still left as of this afternoon. The JV Bruins lead much of the way against Wabash, but the Apaches used a huge fourth quarter to pull away for the 50-35 victory. The JV falls to 6-12 after the loss.
