The Baseball Bruins opened their season in Tennessee today. The Bruins played Fayetteville (6-2-1) and trailed 8-3 after four innings when the game was called due to the 1:45 time limit at the Viking Classic. The Bruins played at Cascade HS in Bell Buckle, TN. The Bruins managed only three hits in that game, including a 2-run homer in the first by Cam Elam, and stole eight bases but none of those stats counted as the game did not go five innings to make it an official game.
Freshman Kaleb Patrick pitched four innings and allowed five earned runs in relief of Gabe Foster. Foster started and pitched to four batters. He gave up three runs on three walks and a hit before departing in the first.
In game two, the Bruins got four in the first thanks to a 2-rbi single by Eli Martin and two more scored on a throwing error by the shortstop on a ball hit by Ethan Morris. Cascade (1-6) rallied for two in the bottom half of the first to make it 4-2.
The Bruins had a chance to extend the lead in the bottom of the 5th, but Nate Limle’s two out line drive went straight to the first basemen to end the inning. Had the gone through, the Bruins would have ld by at least three. The game remained 4-2 heading to the bottom of the fourth when the Champions rallied to tie the game on three hits and took the lead on two consecutive Bruin errors. The Bruins had the go ahead runs on with two outs in the fifth, but a strikeout looking ended the game. Cascade won it, 5-4.
Dane Baker pitched five innings for the Bruins. He allowed five runs, four earned, on eight hits. He walked one batter and struck out eleven.
The Bruins managed six hits and stole seven bases in the loss. Cam Elam went 2-4. Eli Martin was 2-3. Dane Baker and Ethan Morris each added hits. Unfortunately, the Bruins left eight runners on base, five in scoring position.
“I thought we hit better on the day than we would as most got a late start this year and haven’t done a lot of hitting. We had a lot of guys on base and executing our running game pretty well. We just couldn’t get the big hit we needed to pull away,” Coach Tony Uggen said after the game. “Dane (Baker) threw a nice game. He threw a lot of strikes for the first time out, but we just couldn’t make a couple of plays late to hang on.”
The Bruins (0-1) play DeKalb County and Richland tomorrow beginning at 10am Indiana time before returning home.
