The Blackford Lady Bruins traveled to Tri High and get beat 46-65. Lady Bruins played a solid 1st quarter, but trailed 9-12. After the first quarter Tri was able to feed their post really well and take advantage of their size. Phelps #42 had 20 inside points and a ton of rebounds. Blackford was unable to stop them at all once the ball was on the block. Blackford was so worried about stopping the post that their point guard #3 Berchett was able to get some wide open looks and she had 17 points including 3 three point baskets. Blackford had a balanced scoring attack with Liv Waters having 12, Olivia Leas 10, Grace Simmons 8, Erin Cagle 6, Helen Whitesell and Macy Cagle 4, and Reaghan Harding added 2.
Coach Waters said, “We have signs of being a very solid team, but if we don’t defend better we will never reach our potential. Tri is a very solid team, but we can’t give up 65 points to anyone that we play. Moving forward I’ve got to make sure that we focus on what we have to do on the defensive end of the floor. That isn’t the popular choice among the girls, but in order for us to be the team I think we can be we have to get better at that. It’s a little discouraging at our lack of effort on the defensive side and our mental focus overall is not where it needs to be. I’m guessing it is just midseason fatigue. However, looking on the bright side of things, we are 8-6 in the season and have a very winnable game coming up against Burris. It’s hard to pick apart a team that won a combined 5 games the last 3 seasons and 12 in the last 4. I’m proud of what we have accomplished to this point of the season.”
Next up the Lady Bruins play Muncie Burris at home at 7pm. The Lady Bruins fall to 8-6 on the season and are still 3-0 in the conference.
