Tony Uggen

Coaching Staff / 2020-21

Team: Boys Varsity Baseball
Position: Head Coach & Athletic Director

Tony Uggen enters his 8th season at the helm of the Bruin Baseball Program. An ’83 grad of BHS, Uggen served as the head coach at Northfield for 20 seasons where his Norsemen won 13 TRC titles, 7 sectionals, 4 regionals, 2 semi-states, 2 class 2A state titles and were state runner-ups once. He was the 2001 and 2012 2A Coach of the Year and was runner-up twice. Uggen’s Norsemen averaged just over 20 wins per season.

He was the IHSBCA North All-Star Head Coach in 2006. He has also won several District Coach of the Year Awards including 2017 when he lead the Bruins to their first sectional title in 13 years.

He was the head coach at Northfield from 1994-2013 where his teams went 404-171.  In his inaugural season as the Bruin head coach, the Bruins finished 14-14 which was the first non-losing season in 10 years. The Bruins struggled to 4-23 and 8-21 seasons over the next two years, but turned things around in ’17 going 17-13 for the first winning season since ’04. The turn around earned Uggen his first District Coach of the Year award as a Bruin. It is the 7th time he has garnered that recognition. His his teams have now won 476 games. Unfortunately, the Bruins did not play in ’20 due to Covid. The Bruins were to return nearly all their starters and their entire pitching staff. The expectation was that the Bruins would win 20+ games and have a great shot at another sectional title.

The Taylor grad taught primarily 8th grade U.S. History for 10 years. He was the athletic director at Northfield Jr-Sr High from 2004-2013 before taking over in the same position at BHS.

Coach Uggen was inducted into the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2020.

He and his wife, Lisa, have 5 children: Stephanie, Christian, Brandon, Brendan and Elly. They live in Hartford City.
